This rare soft cover ill page small quarto volume was copyrighted by Alexei Masainov in 1927 and published in Nice in 1928. Masainov, a photographer/anthropologist was influenced by Frederick Wright Starr, from whom's estate, this volume was obtained. There is one full page and 14 half page green tone photographs taken by Masainov (see photos). Masainov was one of many Russians who, during the early 20th century did much exploratory work in the Pacific Ocean - this being one in the Polynesian area. The condition is a solid very good - tight, no marks, some edge chipping, some page browning and a few worm holes (fortunately, all outside the text or photographs). Geographically, Mangareva is part of the French Polynesian region. Darwin's visit there is mentioned in the book which is primarily given to a description of the cultures and behavior of the Island's small population - although it was about twice then its current less than 1000. This volume is (can I say) very rare. if you have questions please feel free to ask & I'll try to provide answer. I do amateur modern Russian but I have expert & fluent help when it is required.
