This striking brooch was designed and crafted by Gene Whealton, an artisan who did contract work for Bailey, Banks & Biddle of Philadelphia in the 1950’s-70’s. He did most of his work in a small studio in Tuckerton, N.J. This 2 ½” x 1 1/8” brooch has for its major presentation an oval piece of blue fossilized shale surrounded by a bezel whose prongs are decorated with 3 small diamonds. The upper portion of the piece cradles a 2 1/2 carat fine quality trillium diamond. The connection between the upper and lower piece of the brooch permits a swinging movement of the bottom shale section.
